Early Life
Sequoyah had a very interesting childhood. This paragraph is all about Sequoyah’s early life. First of all, Sequoyah was born in Tennessee to a Cherokee mother and a white father. He was raised as a Cherokee Native American by his mother. His birthday is unclear. This means that historians have not been able to find out his exact birth date. As a young adult, Sequoyah was a painter and a silversmith. He made coins and other things out of silver and metal. Also, Sequoyah fought for the US army in the Creek War from 1813 to 1814. However, he survived this war and came back to Tennessee to continue his life. Sequoyah was a hardworking man!
What is he famous for?
Sequoyah is famous for many things. First of all, Sequoyah began working on a system of writing in 1809. He noticed that the Cherokee did not have a way to write down their ideas and stories. He wanted to help the Cherokee people by developing an alphabet for his people. Finally, around 1821, he had finished his system of writing which included 86 syllables! That is a lot of syllables or sounds! This syllabary, which is a system of writing, became popular among the Cherokee people.

Here are some fun facts about Sequoyah. First of all, Sequoia trees are named after Sequoyah. How interesting is that? Also, thousands of people still use Sequoyah’s writing system today!
